Developers are force-multipliers

C-level executives overwhelmingly report that developers help their companies in critical ways. The best developers build new products, services, and entire businesses. Collectively, developers have the ability to raise global GDP by $3 trillion over the next 10 years. Yet, our study found that even though demand for software engineers is at an all-time high, they aren’t being deployed toward the most impactful projects that move businesses forward.

COMPANIES WASTE $300 BILLION OF DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY EVERY YEAR

Developers spend over 17 hours every week dealing with maintenance issues like debugging and refactoring, and about a quarter of that time is spent fixing bad code. That’s nearly $300B in lost productivity every year. It’s not how many software engineers a company has; it’s how their talent is being utilised.

    • Developers spend 42% of their time on code maintenance
    • 52% of developers believe that technical debt is hindering their productivity
    • 71% of developers believe that they could help bring products to market faster
